Annual Solar Installations overtake Wind Installations for the first time – MNRE

MNRE released the official renewable energy installation numbers, and for the first time since 2012, the annual Solar installed capacity was higher than the Wind installed capacity, despite 2016-17 being a record year for the wind sector. In 2016-17, a total of 5,502 MW of wind capacity was added, which is the highest ever in the history of wind in India. However, Solar sector added 5,526 MW in 2016-17 and managed to overtake Wind by a whisker. In the previous year, Solar came very close to Wind and missed out by a few hundred MW.

In terms of contribution share, Solar’s contribution has increased from just 3.8% at the end of FY 2011-2012 to 21.5% at the end of FY 2016-17.
