Solar crosses 20 GW; Contributes to more than 75% of all new renewable energy installations in 2017-18

As per the data published by MNRE, Solar installations in the country crossed 20 GW. The total grid connected solar installations stood at 20.6 GW whereas the rooftop capacity crossed the 1 GW mark and stood at 1.063 GW as of 31 March 2018. Almost 10 GW of solar capacity was added during 2017-18, which is almost double that of the previous year(5.5 GW in 2016-17).
Solar installations during the year was more than 5 times the wind capacity installed during the year. Annual solar installations overtook Wind during the previous year(read here) and continued the momentum into 2017-18.
The year-wise Solar and Wind capacity addition data as provided by MNRE is given below.

Solar’s contribution has increased to 31.1% at the end of FY 2017-18 from just 3.8% at the end of FY 2011-2012. For the first time, wind’s contribution has fallen below 50%.
